Let the Children Praise: Worship Led by Every Generation

“The blind and the lame came to him in the temple, and he healed them. When the chief priests and the scribes saw the wonders that he did and the children shouting in the temple, “Hosanna to the Son of David!” they were indignant and said to him, “Do you hear what these children are saying?” Jesus replied, “Yes, have you never read: You have prepared praise from the mouths of infants and nursing babies?”

Matthew 21:14-16

Last Sunday our Eastmont kids’ choir was able to lead in worship through song. I’m so thankful for Bro. Mickey and Sue Ellen for the way they are teaching and leading every generation of Eastmont to be worshippers of the King. So often, when it comes to kids’ choirs in church, the goal is either to teach the kids something or to have them practice for some performance. For the last few months on Wednesday nights we specifically and intentionally went away from this model and taught and sang these songs for the sole purpose of praising and worshipping Jesus. It’s been inspiring to see our group that is normally so silly and fun take singing praises in such a worshipful manner.

It’s often said about children that they are the future of the church. While it is true they will be the church leaders in the next 20-30 years, they are also an integral part of the current church. Children can take on more responsibility than society would lead you to believe, which is one reason why I love how Eastmont encourages and incorporates kids. Children participate in our corporate worship times, work as part of our service and mission projects, and even help lead in worship through song. I love that we are a church that doesn’t just tell kids, “sit and watch,” but instead we tell them to “come and participate.”
