The Bible and its Importance in Our Life

Today I want to encourage you about the Bible and the believer’s (our) life.

“The law of the Lord is perfect, restoring the soul; the testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple. The precepts of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart; the commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes. The fear of the Lord is clean, enduring forever; the judgments of the Lord are true; they are righteous altogether.” (Psalm 19:7-9 NASB)

Necessary for Spiritual Health and Joy

Most Christians spend little time in the Word of the Lord, and this is tragic. It is the necessary food for health and joy in our spiritual lives. “The pure milk of the word” (1 Peter 2:2) is for “newborn babies” and the “solid food” for those “not accustomed to the word of righteousness.” (Hebrews 5:12-13) “Your words” are “sweeter than honey to my mouth” (Psalm 119:103), and “every word that proceeds out of the mouth of the Lord” is the very bread by which we live. (Deuteronomy 8:3)

Not only is God’s Word basic in salvation (2 Timothy 3:15; 1 Peter 1:23) but also in sanctification and cleansing day by day: “So that He might sanctify her [the church], having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word.” (Ephesians 5:26)

The Bible Provides Guidance

The Bible also provides daily guidance for those who will use its directions: “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” (Psalm 119:105) Every Christ-follower must be a seed-sowing witness for Him, and “the seed is the word of God.” (Luke 8:11). In the Christian’s armor, the only offensive weapon is “the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God” (Ephesians 6:17), and this means a victorious life and testimony for the believer in Christ who uses it.

The wonderful testimony of David in Psalm 19:7-9 is the Old Testament equivalent of what Paul says in 2 Timothy 3:16: “All scripture is inspired (God-breathed) by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in all righteousness.” I hope and pray that God’s Word is a vital part of your daily life. If it is not, then today is the best day to begin!
