But grace was given to each one of us according to the measure of Christ’s gift… And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God…
Ephesians 4:7-13 (ESV)
In Ephesians, the Apostle Paul speaks of the importance of the “work of ministry” in the overall mission of the Church. Every August, our church begins a “new year” (so to speak) with new opportunities for service in various ministries. With only a few weeks remaining, opportunities still abound for Eastmont members to step into new areas of service. Certainly, there are ministries that require specific skills or knowledge. But there are plenty of areas that simply require a willing heart and a commitment to the body of Christ.
Many of us are tempted to believe that the Church works best when “experts” are placed in every area of ministry. This is how corporate America works, right? Hire the best, most qualified person(s) to fill the role(s). But Paul presents an upside-down way of thinking with regards to the Church. It’s not just the most qualified who serve, but rather it’s those who serve who “build up the body of Christ until we all ”mature in our “knowledge of the Son of God.”
So Eastmont doesn’t need experts, we need humble men and women who view their time and talents as blessings FROM GOD and FOR GOD! You’re the missing piece in the puzzle that God is piecing together here at Eastmont. Whether it’s children’s ministry or music ministry, Sundays or Wednesdays, on-campus or off-campus, your “work of ministry” is what will ultimately carry Eastmont forward as we seek to honor Christ and advance His Kingdom. Be praying for how you can serve your church family as the new church year approaches.
