“There are only two things that are certain in this life, death and taxes.” Like many of you, as a child I heard this expression repeated by the adults in my life a number of times. What I think they were often getting at is the idea that the world around us is always changing and that sort of change results in a degree of uncertainty.
Certainty seems to be an elusive state for many today. In fact, when it comes to living as followers of Christ, certainty may seem the subject of the spiritually elite or only of the super Christians of our day. But what if certainty was in fact the default for us as Christians? This past Sunday we began a series through 1 John titled “Thrive: Living the Christian Life With Certainty.” That first message focused on the idea of belonging to Christ and to one another.
Let’s take a moment to consider one aspect of belonging to one another – unity. Throughout the New
Testament, the church that is thriving is also described as unified. In Ephesians 4, Paul ties the theme of
unity within the church to the doctrine of the Trinity, the Gospel message, and even our ability to be
productive for the Kingdom of God.
As we walk through this series together, let me encourage you to consider how you can help promote even greater unity here at Eastmont. As the old African proverb states, “if you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.”
Eastmont, we have been called to reach the River Region and beyond with the Gospel of Jesus Christ for
the Glory of God. This is a task for a thriving body of believers living under the certainty of our calling
together as Christ’s Body.
